A planning application has been submitted for a new Bio-LNG (Bio-Liquefied Natural Gas) refuelling station at Western Approach Distribution Park — one of the South West’s busiest logistics hubs.
If approved, the station would provide low-carbon fuel for HGVs operating in and out of the site, helping reduce emissions, lower noise levels, and improve local air quality.

While HGVs make up a small proportion of vehicles on UK roads, they are responsible for a significant share of road transport emissions. The proposed station would support a switch away from diesel to Bio-LNG, which is:
Renewable – produced from food waste, farm by-products, and organic materials
Low-carbon – capable of cutting CO₂ emissions by over 80% compared to diesel
Cleaner – reduces air pollutants such as NOₓ, SOₓ, and particulate matter
Quieter – Bio-LNG vehicles are up to 50% quieter than diesel trucks
If the project goes ahead, it could reduce emissions by up to 65,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year — equivalent to taking around 5,000 cars off the road.

Bio-LNG is widely used and subject to stringent safety standards. The proposed station would include:
No fuel production onsite – Bio-LNG is delivered by tanker in liquid form and stored in sealed tanks
No waste handling – All fuel is ready-to-use, with no on-site processing or odours
Fast, low-impact refuelling – Each truck refuels in around 5–7 minutes
Minimal visual impact – The station would be screened and designed to integrate with the industrial surroundings
In the unlikely event of a leak, Bio-LNG is lighter than air and would evaporate safely into the atmosphere. It does not pool, linger or smell like petrol or diesel.

Western Approach Distribution Park is home to several national logistics operators, with hundreds of daily HGV movements. A dedicated Bio-LNG station would allow those vehicles to operate with significantly reduced emissions and noise, directly benefiting the surrounding area.
