Case study
Reed Boardall Transport
The state-of-the-art fully scalable station at Reed Boardall’s Boroughbridge depot was designed by Dutch LNG experts LIQAL and can service up to 150 LNG trucks per day.
The facility was opened to support Reed Boardall’s 70 Volvo FH LNG units. Capable of a range of 470-480kms on a single tank, the trucks give Reed Boardall comfortably enough range for return journeys around north and central England.
Reed Boardall and Gasrec have worked together to enable other local operators to use the site. Other companies using the site include Clipper, Arla Foods, MP Burke and XPO.
The station
The new station at Boroughbridge was designed by Dutch LNG expert LIQAL. The compact, prefabricated system requires limited construction time on site and supplies the same fuelling consistency and reliability as a fully-fledged LNG fuelling station.
The station also includes saturation technology, enabling it to dispense LNG at specific pressures, as well as 24/7 connectivity to Gasrec’s remote monitoring centre.
Fuel levels on the station are monitored remotely by Gasrec and fuel is delivered by Gasrec tanker when required. Remote connectivity to Gasrec’s Remote Operating Centre (ROC) also enables 24/7 operating support and notification of any faults or station problems.
The current permanent station was preceded by a smaller Chart LNG skid unit, which was deployed to support Reed Boardall’s initial 20 LNG Volvo units.
The small units can be used to seed new locations to get LNG into an area quickly and are ideal for early adopters like Reed Boardall.
Location
The LNG refuelling station is the first of its kind in North Yorkshire and is well situated for freight traffic moving along the A1(M) corridor to the north-east.
The vehicles
Reed Boardall’s LNG trucks each benefit from Volvo’s unique approach to gas engine technology, using small amounts of diesel to initiate ignition of the air-fuel mixture. This enables the Volvo G13C engine to deliver the same 460 hp and 2,300 Nm of torque as its diesel-only counterpart, with matching driveability, reliability and service intervals.
Reed Boardall’s LNG fleet now numbers 70 vehicles in total.
Environmental benefits
A key factor in Reed Boardall’s decision to move to LNG was government emission targets. Graeme Richardson, Managing Director, Reed Boardall, said: “The government has set very stringent targets to reduce carbon emissions by 2030 and we are determined to play our part and meet those goals.”
Using Gasrec’s Bio-LNG from waste-only sources, Reed Boardall are able to benefit from CO2 savings of up to 95%, as well as a 99 per cent reduction in particulate matter and 90 per cent in NO2 emissions compared to equivalent Euro VI diesel trucks. HGVs running on gas are also around 50 per cent quieter than their diesel equivalents.
