22 July 2010 - Fuelling vehicles with sustainable, UK-sourced, low carbon fuel is set to become a commercially viable option for fleet operators. Gasrec, Europe’s first commercial producer of Liquid Biomethane (LBM), has signed a deal with Gas Container Services (GCS), in which GCS will provide refuelling facilities to commercial fleet owners for Gasrec’s LBM. It will also transport Gasrec’s biomethane fuel round the UK from Gasrec’s processing plant in Albury, Surrey (UK) to service specific contracts.

GCS, which designs and builds vehicle gas fuelling facilities and supplies gas fuel throughout the UK, already has an LBM and LCBM refuelling station in Nottingham, from which it fuel’s its own large vehicles (two HGVs and four forklift trucks) with Gasrec’s LBM fuel.
Gasrec LBM is produced by extracting the natural gas produced by biomass (organic waste such as food by-products) in landfill, or by digestion of the biomass by-products of industries such as food manufacture and retail. This gas is then converted to LBM, which is a commercially competitive and environmentally sound fuel that can be directly substituted for both Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). This LBM is used to fuel dedicated gas-powered and duel-fuel vehicles, ranging from commercial trucks to high-performance cars; or for decentralised (off grid) power generation.
Gasrec’s LBM is UK sourced, sustainable and commercially competitive. It is a much cleaner alternative to diesel with C02 and other green house gas emission savings of up to 70 per cent resulting in huge improvements in air quality emissions.
Gasrec is a preferred supplier of LBM fuel to Iveco, and is working with a number of councils (such as Camden), commercial fleet owners (such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Coca-Cola) and heavy vehicle owners (such as East Midlands Airport) to provide vehicles running on biomethane.
Richard Barski, MD of GCS, says: “There are now high-quality right hand drive vehicles on the market - from manufacturers such as Iveco,- that will run on gas. The beauty of Gasrec’s LBM is that it is UK-sourced, sustainable, high purity and dry. Costs and availability are not therefore dependent on a fluctuating import driven marketplace LBM is competitive - larger fleets could save in excess of 20 per cent in fuel costs over diesel by using LBM.”
Richard Lilleystone, CEO for Gasrec, says: “The programme addresses two important issues: the reclamation of the retained energy in waste and the provision of ‘UK produced’ sustainable carbon neutral fuel. The Gasrec process converts landfill gas into a high quality fuel that can be used in any vehicle that runs on gas. We have major manufacturers making vehicles to run on LBM, and we now see the beginnings of having the infrastructure to deliver it to fleets across the UK. LBM is a real and viable option for fleet operators. We very much look forward to a working relationship with GCS.”
