Gasrec Successful at Greenfleet Awards 2008
29.09.08

Gasrec, the UK’s first commercial producer of liquid biomethane fuel, last night won the Greenfleet Alternative Fuel Supplier of the Year Award at a ceremony at Twickenham hosted by Richmond-upon-Thames Council.

The GreenFleet Awards, now in their tenth year, recognise the pioneers of environmental fleet management. Gasrec joined a list of winners including BMW (Car Manufacturer of the Year) and EDF Energy (Fleet manager of the Year – Private Sector), to take the award won last year by Rix Biodisel.

The Hardstaff Group provided support to Gasrec as logistics partner.

Gasrec was also a finalist in the Capital Fuel Challenge event, which was judged at the Awards. Held earlier in the year at Horse Guards Parade, and sponsored by Transport for London, the Challenge assigned a freight task to over 30 contestants, including former F1 World Champion Damon Hill driving an electric sports car, in order to measure their fuel efficiency. Each vehicle had to navigate its way around the congestion charge zone, stopping at four predetermined checkpoints to pick up a parcel. The Gasrec Lotus Elise, which runs on LBM, was entered by Camden Council, and was one of five contestants selected as finalists for the TfL Public Sector Fleet of the Year Award.

Richard Lilleystone, Chief Executive Officer at Gasrec, said: “We are delighted to have won this award as recognition of the strides forward we have made this year. We saw the launch of our flagship liquid biomethane plant at the SITA landfill site in Albury and the commencement of a number of initiatives to develop our customer base with Veolia and Camden Council, as well as Sainsbury's. There is undoubtedly growing support for green motoring as we all become more environmentally aware, but we cannot afford to be complacent, and events such as the Greenfleet Awards help put the cause firmly on the agenda.”

About Gasrec

Gasrec is a producer of liquid methane fuel utilising gas generated by the decomposition of biomass. It obtains its gas supply from existing landfill sites or from controlled digestion of the biomass byproducts of food manufacture, retail and other industries. In creating and selling the fuel product, Gasrec recovers the latent energy stored in material discarded by society to power vehicles, especially those operating in the urban environment, or to generate electricity or CHP (Combined Heat and Power).

The generation of power from landfill sites in the UK is tried and tested, with over 300 UK landfill sites generating approximately 1,700 MW/h each year. However, a proportion of sites continue to flare unused gas as hitherto their development was not economically viable, thereby wasting the energy potential of the gas.

Gasrec has identified a clean, efficient use for this gas in the production of LBM (Liquid Bio Methane), a commercially competitive and environmentally sound fuel that can be directly substituted for both CNG (compressed natural gas) and LNG (liquefied natural gas) for use in gas-powered or dual-fuel vehicles, or to generate electricity or CHP (Combined Heat and Power).
