The issue of the 21st century
The contribution of LBM to the fight against global warming is manifold. Its production and use will result in less environmental damage than the flaring of methane, which is the current minimum statutory obligation, or power generation using raw landfill gas, where the exhaust plume can contain high levels of pollutants.
It also, however, burns more cleanly than fossil fuels, with a 90% reduction in particulate production, a 50% reduction in Nitrous Oxide and a 30% reduction in Sulphur Dioxide. On a well to wheel basis the CO2 savings achieved by using LBM as a fuel substitute for fossil diesel or petrol are in the region of 70% (per the JEC2006 and CONCAWE studies).
